Who…

Who is famous for Abstract Art?

Some of the most popular artist’s to create abstract paintings are; Jackson Pollock, Wassily Kandinsky, Mark Rothko and Georgia O’Keefe.

My earliest memory of being drawn to Abstract Art was at school, I was in Year 4 and in the UK you are 8-9, and we were given the task of studying Wassily Kandinsky’s “Squares with Concentric Circles”. I remember enjoying painting the circles and mixing different colours and not feeling pressure to create anything perfect. I went home and continued to create more similar paintings for a long time and my mum eventually brought me a print of the original for my room. I wasn't interested in having the typical posters on my walls, I wanted a framed print (albeit from IKEA) for my bedroom.

Fast forward many years and I was living in London on my placement year at University, and I visited the ‘Rothko Room’ at the TATE Modern. The sheer size of Mark Rothko’s artwork was what I found so profound. You could literally get lost in the colours in the painting and it was amazing, like nothing else I’d ever seen. I highly recommend visiting if you’re in London!
